IRA Distributions

Give from your IRA

If you are a retiree you can give up to $100,000 to Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter tax-free from an IRA and have it count as your required minimum distribution for the year.  This reduces your adjusted gross income and helps pets while they wait for their forever home.

Make a tremendous impact today and help us ensure that all the pets at the Shelter get the care they need.

If you are 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 to Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (Friends) tax-free each year — even if that’s more than your required minimum distribution (RMD). The money counts as your RMD but isn’t included in your adjusted gross income.  You can give your RMD to Friends anytime during the year.

You need to transfer the money directly from the IRA to the Friends for it to count as the tax-free transfer. Ask your IRA administrator and Friends about making a direct transfer, or you can have the IRA administrator send a check from your account to Friends. Please request to include your name and address on the check so that we may thank you for your generosity.  Checks should be made payable to the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and sent to PO Box 2321, Centreville, VA, 20122.

As always, we recommend that you consult your tax or financial professional for advice before making charitable donations.
